Does anyone else’s head swim in the produce aisle? I know this stuff — I research it and care about it — but for some reason, every trip to the grocery store stumps me at least once. So I made myself a cheat sheet. Sharing it in case anyone else would like to copy or print it!
I’m only absolute about a few of these things — corn and potatoes have to be organic or non-GMO, or we just don’t eat those things that week. Other foods, like berries, I’ll aim for organic but if it’s twice the price, I’ll buy conventional. And still other foods, like broccoli and bananas, I toss in my cart no questions asked. Individual blog posts cover this stuff in more detail, but at a glance:
| Buy Freely | Organic or Non-GMO (always) | Organic if possible (these foods are high in pesticides, some worse than others) | Organic if possible (or hormone- and antibiotic-free) |
| asparagus avocado bananas broccoli cabbage carrots cauliflower eggplant grapefruit honeydew melon kiwi lemons limes mango mushrooms onions oranges peas pineapple tomatoes watermelon wild fish wild game | alfalfa apples canola cereal crackers corn bread (for the yeast) miso papaya potatoes processed foods soy sugar tofu | blackberries blueberries celery cherries collard greens grapes green beans kale mustard greens nectarines peaches pears peppers spinach strawberries | meat dairy poultry farmed fish |
I’ll update this list regularly. I’m still a student in the art of healthy living — and will share everything I learn as I go along.
